Kerala’s success in family welfare is because of high literacy among women: Thanjavur Collector

A rally was taken out in connection with World Population Day here on Monday. Collector K.Baskaran flagged off the rally from Thilakar Thidal.

It wended its way via main streets and reached Sangeetha Mahal. The Collector said that Kerala stood first in the country in implementation of family welfare schemes while Tamil Nadu stood second. Kerala’s success in family welfare is due to the high literacy rate among women. Nursing students of Thanjavur Medical College, Mannai Narayanasamy Para Medical College, students of Kundavai Nachiyar Government Arts College, and members of Nehru Yuva Kendra participated in the rally.

An awareness procession was taken out as part of observance of ‘World Population Day’ here on Monday. B. Maheswari, District Collector, flagged off the procession near the Public Office campus in which students, doctors, members of Nehru Yuva Kendra and volunteers from service organisations participated.

A seminar on ‘World Population Day’ was held in which S. Suriyakala, Joint Director of Health and Rural Services, spoke on the importance of the day. She explained the impact of population explosion on environment and natural resources.

N. Chandramohan, Ramanathan, Chandrasekar, Muthaiah, Krishnaleela and Sundaravadhanam, all representing medical fraternity; S.Sathyaseelan, secretary of District Supply and Market Society; K. Sathasivam, district youth coordinator, Nehru Yuva Kendra spoke.

Later, Dr. Suriyakala gave away prizes to students who won in various competitions held as part of the observance of the day.
